As Jesus Prayed

Aug 16, 2017 07:00 am

Jesus is our great model in intercession. He regularly retreated to a quiet place to pray. He sought God for strength to meet the challenges of the day. He pleaded with His Father for strength to overcome Satan’s temptations. If Jesus, the Divine Son of God, understood that prayer is a necessity, don’t we need prayer much more in our own lives? Jesus recognized that inner spiritual strength comes through prayer. Luke’s Gospel records, “He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed” (Luke 5:16).

Prayer was not something Jesus did occasionally when a need or problem arose. Prayer was a vital part of His life. Daily the Savior renewed His relationship with His Father through prayer. Jesus’ prayer life gave Him courage and strength to face temptation. If Jesus needed time in His Father’s presence to overcome the fierce temptations of Satan, we certainly need time in God’s presence much more. Jesus was filled with power because He took time to pray.

Prayer habits that last a lifetime are most often formed in childhood. That’s why it’s so critical to teach young children how to pray. As with most spiritual disciplines, prayer is caught more than it’s taught. As teachers model meaningful prayer lives, kids will learn how they, too, can talk to their Creator.

Teach your kids the basic elements of prayer. Making requests is only one aspect of talking to God. To remember the other important elements, think of the letters of the word “ACTS”:

A is for Adoration: praising God for who He is.

C is for Confession: admitting to God our sins and telling Him we’re sorry.

T is for Thanksgiving: recalling all that God has done for us.

S is for Supplication: making requests, both for others (intercession) and ourselves (petition).

Creative Prayer Ideas:

AFFIRMATION JARS-each person in the class or group has a jar into which prayers of appreciation and affirmation are placed by others.(Great for family devotions)

BAND-AID PRAYER-give each person a Band-Aid to put on. This is a reminder and source for praying for those who are hurting and suffering both physically or emotionally.

HAND PRAYER-use your hand as a reminder of those we need to pray for. Thumb-those closest to you, family and close friends; Pointer-those who lead and

guide you, teachers, pastors, police, coaches; Middle-the tall finger reminds us of those in authority, presidents, mayors, student government officials; Ring-this

weak finger is for those in our life who are ill, disabled, lonely, unhappy; Pinky the smallest and last finger is a reminder to pray for ourselves!

About Us

The Adventurer Club is a Seventh-day Adventist Church-sponsored ministry open to all families of children in grades 1-4. Our mission is to support parents and caregivers in leading and encouraging their children in a growing, joyful love relationship with Jesus Christ.
The first few years of a child’s life sets the stage for their future.  For parents/families of pre-K through fourth grade children, our Adventurer Clubs provide a safe place to encourage the development of the necessary social and interpersonal skills they need, in an environment that promotes Christian values and responsibilities.
Families will learn a variety of topics together, from character building, nature, hobbies, safety, and much more. This club also has parenting tips and resources through the family network and is designed to help you be the best parent/caregiver you can be as you partner with your child and other families to grow your kids to be the best they can be. Most clubs meet twice a month.
