3. Is there an apparent penalty to obedience and how is that reconciled to the profit of God’s protection? Deuteronomy 4:30

4. What is God’s ultimate wish for His children and what hope does that give? Deuteronomy 5:29

Commentary and Reflection:

The profound declaration of God, in private to Moses, is repeated publicly by Moses to the people of God. In Deuteronomy 3:24-27, Moses pleaded and hoped for a reversal from God (PP 462). It was not to be! For Moses, the consequence of his sin was not remedied purely by the forgiveness of God. Even though we may be cleansed from a past act, the consequences exist. A drunk driver that caused the death of a father maybe forgiven but be relegated to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. However, God still allowed Moses to have a panoramic view from the top of Pisgah and to “behold it with thine eyes” (3:27 NKJV). Moses still felt it necessary to share a glimpse of the glory of Jordan mixed with the disappointment due to the obstinate ways of the same people that may have aided in his demise. Imagine how Moses must have felt. Yet, his responsibilities included motivating the saints to journey to paradise, without him. We are called to a service greater than us.

Upon sharing the Commandments from God, Moses sought to validate the precepts solely on the premise of the Lawgiver. In offering counsel, the people must reminisce on the solid impact that God has had in the life of each child through growth and maturity. In effect, a fulfilling purpose is paved with promises and reminders of the past. It is also true that an oral dissemination of God’s word is optimal to acceptance and advancement in a fulfilling relationship of obedience. As such, the guardians of the galaxy of truth must aid in encouraging and motivating a successful path forward. It is also noteworthy that Moses offered further reminders. “But I must die in this land, I must not cross over the Jordan; but you shall cross over and possess that good land” (Deut. 4:22 NKJV). A key discovery is that personal reflections and encounters must be mixed with future promises and the anticipation of prosperity.
The motivation for obedience is in the sustaining power of God and not human strength. According to 4:29-30 NKJV, there can be no reservation in offering complete adulation and single-mindedness to God. We will face challenges on the journey to Jordan. There are obstacles and traps along the way that will threaten our progress and even derail our attainment. However, God “will not forsake you nor destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers which He swore to them” (4:31b NKJV). In effect, this is why Jesus is STILL our savior and Lord.
God’s ultimate wish is not just obedience but more so reaping the benefits of obedience. It is for this reason that we cannot earn salvation. If that were the case, Moses would have the best case for salvation by works. Fulfillment of the plan of salvation is of paramount importance to God especially because forever is in sight. The desire of Heaven is that we on Earth will be prepared to meet Jesus when He comes and enjoy life FOREVER! Herein is the purpose and fulfillment of the Law. By God’s grace, let us possess the land that God has promised us as we prolong our days.

My prayer today: Almighty God, please help us to be obedient to your words and see the benefits of a sanctified life with you. Keep our eyes on a forever life with you.  In Jesus name, amen.

About Us

The Adventurer Club is a Seventh-day Adventist Church-sponsored ministry open to all families of children in grades 1-4. Our mission is to support parents and caregivers in leading and encouraging their children in a growing, joyful love relationship with Jesus Christ.
The first few years of a child’s life sets the stage for their future.  For parents/families of pre-K through fourth grade children, our Adventurer Clubs provide a safe place to encourage the development of the necessary social and interpersonal skills they need, in an environment that promotes Christian values and responsibilities.
Families will learn a variety of topics together, from character building, nature, hobbies, safety, and much more. This club also has parenting tips and resources through the family network and is designed to help you be the best parent/caregiver you can be as you partner with your child and other families to grow your kids to be the best they can be. Most clubs meet twice a month.
