1. How long was the covenant ark in Philistine territory? (See 1 Samuel 6:1)
2. How much respect did the Philistine religious leaders show for the God of Israel? (See 1 Samuel 6:3, 4)
3. What fate befell the men of Beth-shemesh? (See 1 Samuel 6:19)
Commentary and Reflection:
The Philistines endured seven months of punishment due to the presence of the Ark; the plague persisted because they delayed its return. Sinners prolong their suffering when they refuse to turn away from their sins. Similarly, the Israelites made no effort to retrieve the Ark. Where can we observe a prevailing interest in spiritual matters above all else?
In times of public calamity, we often fear for ourselves, our families, and our country, but who concerns themselves with the Ark of God? We are blessed with the Gospel, yet we often treat it with negligence or contempt. Should we be surprised if it is taken from us? To many, its loss may not bring sorrow, though it would mark the gravest of calamities.
The two cows recognized their Master, their great Owner, whom Hophni and Phinehas did not acknowledge. God’s providence extends even to beasts, employing them for His purposes. When the reapers beheld the Ark, their joy surpassed even that of the harvest. The return of the Ark and the revival of holy celebrations, after days of restraint and tribulation, brought great joy.
A significant offense against God is when vain individuals intrude into sacred matters out of curiosity. Humanity’s downfall often stems from the desire for forbidden knowledge. God does not tolerate the profanation of His Ark. “Do not be deceived, God cannot be mocked.” Those who fail to reverence His goodness or utilize His grace irreverently will inevitably face His justice.
God will secure a resting place for His Ark; should some disdain it the hearts of others will be inclined to receive it. It is not uncommon for God’s Ark to reside in a private dwelling. Christ and His apostles preached from house to house when public venues were unavailable.
Twenty years passed before the house of Israel expressed concern over the Ark’s absence. During this period, the prophet Samuel labored for a revival of true religion. The brevity of his words is poignant; this was one of the most impactful revivals of religion in Israel’s history.
Israel drew water and poured it out before the Lord, symbolizing their humility and sorrow for sin. They poured out their hearts in repentance before the Lord, resolved to rid themselves of all evil deeds. Their public confession, “We have sinned against the Lord,” demonstrates that if we confess our sins in this manner, God is faithful and just to forgive us.
When sinners begin to repent and reform, they should anticipate Satan gathering his strength against them, using all his instruments to oppose and discourage them. The Israelites fervently implored Samuel to pray for them. How comforting it is for all believers that our great Intercessor on high never ceases to pray! He is always in the presence of God on our behalf. God responded with grace. Samuel erected a stone as a memorial of this victory, glorifying God and encouraging Israel. Throughout successive generations, the church of God has had cause to raise new Ebenezers for new deliverances. External persecutions and internal corruptions have not prevailed against it, for “Thus far the Lord has helped us,” and He will continue to do so until the end of the world.
May God bless you all.
