Wednesday, June 12 – Psalms 35, 54
1. What prayer did David offer when facing Saul? (Psalm 35:1-3)
2. How did David feel when unjustly accused? (Psalm 35:13, 14)
3. In whom did David trust for his defense? (Psalm 54:1, 2)
Commentary and Reflection
David’s words are intense and bitter. Some may critique his prayers against his enemies, yet we must consider the dire circumstances he faced. He was fleeing from Saul’s pursuit to kill him, deceived, ensnared, slandered, betrayed, with enemies reveling in his troubles. This placed immense physical and psychological pressure on him. He reacted by praying fervently, even for his detractors.
In times of such pressure, when we feel overwhelmed by injustice, it is safest to turn to prayer. Even if we ask for things not aligned with God’s will, the Holy Spirit refines our prayers, “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” (Romans 8:26).
Prayer offers security; reacting under pressure or manipulated by injustices is perilous. David’s example teaches us the power of prayer amidst adversity. It is our strongest defense. Ultimately, God will take care of it all.
May the Lord contend for you this day and shield you from all harm.
