Tuesday, September 3 – Psalms 37, 118

Study Questions:

1. What profound meaning do we find in Psalm 37:5, “Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass”?

2. Does David’s testimony in Psalm 37:25, “I have been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, Nor his descendants begging bread,” mean that Christians will not experience need?

3. What did the Psalmist mean when he said, “The voice of rejoicing and salvation Is in the tents of the righteous” (Psalm 118:15)?

Commentary and Reflection:

Psalm 37 speaks to us about trusting instead of worrying about what is happening around us. The Psalm begins with phrases such as “Trust in the Lord,” “Delight yourself also in the Lord,” “Commit your way to the Lord,” “Rest in the Lord,” and “those who wait on the Lord.” These phrases instill peace and trust in us.

In verse 5, the Psalmist invites us to commit our way to the Lord and trust in Him. How could we apply this to daily life? You may be a person of agendas. You probably already know what you want to do tomorrow once you wake up, what you will do at noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and evening. While it is very appropriate to have a daily agenda, “committing our way to the Lord” could mean that tomorrow’s itinerary is just a human proposal, entirely subject to God’s will. In other words, I propose to God what I plan to do, but He will determine if it will happen.

Amidst an abundant flow of lessons, we can highlight the verse many Christians have memorized with great love for God: “I have been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, Nor his descendants begging bread.” This is the testimony of a king who lived simply in his youth, lived through the decades, and never saw a faithful man or woman die from a lack of basic supplies. The author’s testimony is a prediction that applies to every believer.

Psalm 118 is another spiritual treasure trove. Like Psalm 37, it is a song of praise and acknowledgment of trust in God.

With wisdom, the author refers to “the voice of rejoicing and salvation in the tents of the righteous.” How is this possible? When God is the one who governs the family, there will be joy and salvation. There may be problems and challenges, but God will always bring them through. The result will always be victory.

Life may not be long enough to uncover all the treasures in Psalms 37 and 118. Their teachings are profound and nearly endless.

My prayer: “This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24). Lord, help us to trust more in You today. We ask that Your promises continue to be fulfilled in us and our families and that there be joy and redemption in all our homes.

About Us

The Adventurer Club is a Seventh-day Adventist Church-sponsored ministry open to all families of children in grades 1-4. Our mission is to support parents and caregivers in leading and encouraging their children in a growing, joyful love relationship with Jesus Christ.
The first few years of a child’s life sets the stage for their future.  For parents/families of pre-K through fourth grade children, our Adventurer Clubs provide a safe place to encourage the development of the necessary social and interpersonal skills they need, in an environment that promotes Christian values and responsibilities.
Families will learn a variety of topics together, from character building, nature, hobbies, safety, and much more. This club also has parenting tips and resources through the family network and is designed to help you be the best parent/caregiver you can be as you partner with your child and other families to grow your kids to be the best they can be. Most clubs meet twice a month.
