Wednesday, January 15 – Jeremiah 4, 5

Study Questions:

1. What is the circumcision that truly matters to Jehovah? Jeremiah 4:4

2. What was Jehovah looking for in Jerusalem? Jeremiah 5:1

Commentary and Reflection:

In Jeremiah 4, Jehovah calls His people to true repentance. There are three specific admonitions:

1. “If you put away your abominations from before me, and do not wander to and fro” (see 1).

This clearly refers to the pagan gods they had and worshiped. The worship of these gods was immoral and abominable.
2. “And if with truth, justice, and righteousness you swear: ‘As surely as the Lord lives,’” (see 2).

This is a consistent theme in God’s message, calling His people to act justly toward the needy, poor, and oppressed, and to do justice for all.
3. “Circumcise yourselves to the Lord, and take away the foreskin of your heart, you men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, lest my wrath go forth like fire, and burn so that no one can quench it, because of the evil of your deeds.” (see 4).

He is calling His people to a religion of the heart, not just a formal one. Circumcision was a physical sign, but more important than physical circumcision is the circumcision of the heart. The circumcision of the body only makes sense and holds value when the mind is surrendered to God. If the heart is not circumcised, we will suffer God’s judgments just like the wicked.

It is not the time to live and act as if nothing is happening. We must sound the trumpet in the people of God, draw attention, and humble ourselves before God. For the invader comes from the north. He comes like a lion to devour and destroy. This refers to Babylon, coming like a mighty wind over Judah.
Jeremiah suffers deeply in his innermost being when he sees this vision. He is weary of war and destruction. He reiterates the reason for war and captivity: “For my people are foolish, they do not know me; they are senseless children and have no understanding; they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.” (see 22)
Jeremiah 4:23-27 primarily applies to judgments over Judah, but the prophet also offers us a glimpse of the earth during the millennium, after the second coming of Jesus: “I looked on the earth, and behold, it was without form and void; and the heavens, and they had no light. I looked on the mountains, and behold, they trembled, and all the hills moved back and forth. I looked, and behold, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens had fled.” (verses 23-25)
In Jeremiah 5, he says that the corruption of the people is total. Not even one practices justice or seeks the truth. “Run to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem.”

“This order is given to highlight the increase of moral corruption prevailing in Jerusalem. This challenge reminds us of the ancient story of Diogenes, the Greek philosopher and founder of the Cynic school, who walked by day in the streets of Athens carrying a lamp, pretending to search for an honest man. The command to ‘run,’ ‘look,’ ‘inform yourself,’ and ‘search’ unmistakably draws attention to the great scarcity of upright people.” CBA, Jeremiah 5:1

He also looks among the “great” ones, but they, like the rest, have broken the covenant.
Jehovah has no other choice but to judge His people because the corruption is widespread, both among the people and the leaders: “A wonderful and horrible thing has happened in the land: The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule by their own power; and my people love to have it so. But what will you do in the end?” Jeremiah 5:30, 31
“The combined impiety of the leaders and the people made ‘the end’ inevitable. The nation is exhorted here to consider this solemn reality. While the false prophets were concerned only with the present and their immediate prosperity, Jeremiah was concerned with the final fate of the nation.” CBA, Jeremiah 5:31
Let us look beyond the daily matters, beyond what is real in the world that does not believe that Jehovah will act. Let us consider what He has announced through the prophets. Even though the world does not believe it and does not expect it, He will act.
God bless you this day.

About Us

The Adventurer Club is a Seventh-day Adventist Church-sponsored ministry open to all families of children in grades 1-4. Our mission is to support parents and caregivers in leading and encouraging their children in a growing, joyful love relationship with Jesus Christ.
The first few years of a child’s life sets the stage for their future.  For parents/families of pre-K through fourth grade children, our Adventurer Clubs provide a safe place to encourage the development of the necessary social and interpersonal skills they need, in an environment that promotes Christian values and responsibilities.
Families will learn a variety of topics together, from character building, nature, hobbies, safety, and much more. This club also has parenting tips and resources through the family network and is designed to help you be the best parent/caregiver you can be as you partner with your child and other families to grow your kids to be the best they can be. Most clubs meet twice a month.
