Friday, July 12 – 1 Chronicles 13, 14 – Additional Reading: Patriarchs and Prophets, Chapter 70, “The Reign of David”

Study Questions:

1. What did David propose to the leaders of Israel regarding the ark of God? (1 Chronicles 13:2-3)

2. What happened to Uzza when he touched the ark of God, and what was David’s reaction? (1 Chronicles 13:9-11)

3. How did God respond to David’s inquiry before facing the Philistines? (1 Chronicles 14:10, 14:14-15)

Commentary and Reflection:

A passage that can be difficult to understand is 1 Chronicle 13:9-11 when God strikes down Uzza and dies after touching the ark to prevent it from falling. This act may seem severe at first glance. However, the key is understanding the ark’s holiness, representing God’s presence. The law specified how it was to be transported (Numbers 4:15), and Uzza’s act, though seemingly well-intentioned, was a direct violation of these instructions. This tragedy served as a reminder of God’s holiness and the need to obey His commands.

This passage emphasizes the importance of obedience and respect for God’s holiness. Upon realizing his mistake for not following divine instructions, David ensured that the ark was transported correctly (1 Chronicles 15:13). Good intentions must be accompanied by correct execution in obedience to God’s will. In 1 Chronicles 14, we see how David consulted God before facing the Philistines, and God granted him victory. Dependence and obedience to God are fundamental for the believer’s success.

It is easy to think that good intentions justify any action. However, Uzza’s story reminds us that we must seek God’s guidance and obey His commandments precisely and reverently. Moreover, David shows us the importance of consulting God in our critical decisions. We often face challenges and battles, and like David, we need to seek divine direction to make the right choices.

May the Lord grant you wisdom today to obey His commandments and the humility to consult His will in all your decisions. May His presence guide you and give you peace, and by trusting in Him, may you find success and blessing in every area of your life. Amen.

About Us

The Adventurer Club is a Seventh-day Adventist Church-sponsored ministry open to all families of children in grades 1-4. Our mission is to support parents and caregivers in leading and encouraging their children in a growing, joyful love relationship with Jesus Christ.
The first few years of a child’s life sets the stage for their future.  For parents/families of pre-K through fourth grade children, our Adventurer Clubs provide a safe place to encourage the development of the necessary social and interpersonal skills they need, in an environment that promotes Christian values and responsibilities.
Families will learn a variety of topics together, from character building, nature, hobbies, safety, and much more. This club also has parenting tips and resources through the family network and is designed to help you be the best parent/caregiver you can be as you partner with your child and other families to grow your kids to be the best they can be. Most clubs meet twice a month.
