Commentary and Reflection:

Victory was assured under one condition: Israel would obey ALL God commanded. While they often plundered defeated cities and distributed spoils among the fighters, this time, the order was clear: nothing would be taken because it was considered an offering to God in Canaan’s first city. Unfortunately, Achan secretly took forbidden items and hid them in a hole in the middle of his tent.

The result was swift. In the assault on the next city, Ai, failure was total. The opposite of what was expected happened. Defeated and fleeing, Israel appeared cowardly and vulnerable before the surrounding nations. Consulting the Lord, Joshua learned the reason: there was ANATHEMA in the camp. Achan’s behavior during the search was shameful. Despite knowing God was aware, he remained silent until the search pointed to his house, confessing only then. Was this confession sincere?
One might think God was harsh in punishing Achan’s family. Were they innocent? Could they be unaware of the hole in their tent to bury items from Jericho? Sometimes, God acts seemingly harshly to preserve greater values, like the nation’s integrity. Israel would have lost the courage needed to conquer Canaan.
This lesson applies today: we don’t play games with God. To Him the integrity of their children is more valuable than all the wealth in the world.
Don’t miss Joshua’s adventures in the Promised Land conquest. It’s an epic of courage and trust in God.
It’s my prayer that we trust in God and always take His Word seriously.

About Us

The Adventurer Club is a Seventh-day Adventist Church-sponsored ministry open to all families of children in grades 1-4. Our mission is to support parents and caregivers in leading and encouraging their children in a growing, joyful love relationship with Jesus Christ.
The first few years of a child’s life sets the stage for their future.  For parents/families of pre-K through fourth grade children, our Adventurer Clubs provide a safe place to encourage the development of the necessary social and interpersonal skills they need, in an environment that promotes Christian values and responsibilities.
Families will learn a variety of topics together, from character building, nature, hobbies, safety, and much more. This club also has parenting tips and resources through the family network and is designed to help you be the best parent/caregiver you can be as you partner with your child and other families to grow your kids to be the best they can be. Most clubs meet twice a month.
