Sunday, May 4 – Matthew 17, Mark 8
1. What invitation does God give in Matthew 17:5?
2. What was Jesus’ response to the question, “Why could we not cast it out?” (Matthew 17:20)?
3. How did He answer the question, “How can one satisfy these people with bread here in the wilderness?” (Mark 8:5)?
4. To the question, “But who do you say that I am?” how did Peter respond? (Mark 8:29)?
5. Who is Jesus to you?
Today is another opportunity to thank God for a new morning, a new chance, renewed hope, and a fresh beginning. I invite you to reflect on these scenes from Jesus’s life, which can undoubtedly strengthen your faith.
The Transfiguration of Jesus is a divine act that leaves no doubt that He is God with us. God Himself gives testimony:
“While He was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, ‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!’” (Matthew 17:5)
This revelation of Jesus’ glory carries deep meaning: it previews the glory He would receive after His death and resurrection. It was a moment of strength for the disciples who would soon face the darkness of the cross.
At times, we feel alone and burdened by trials that breed discouragement. To you, the Savior says: “I endured Calvary; I conquered death so that you may be victorious. Just place your faith in Me.”
“And when they had come to the multitude, a man came to Him, kneeling down to Him and saying, ‘Lord, have mercy on my son…’” (Matthew 17:14–15)
The term “lunatic” has been interpreted as a type of schizophrenia—an illness of the mind that, in the time of Christ, had no cure. Many were abandoned by their families. However, in this case, the father sought help from Jesus, the trustworthy source of healing and life.
“Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, ‘Why could we not cast it out?’ So Jesus said to them, ‘Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.’” (Matthew 17:19–21)
Crises often arrive suddenly. Sometimes they seem like immovable mountains. But remember: if you cannot move the mountain, dare to climb it. Set spiritual goals and ascend to the peak—and once there, you’ll be positioned to witness the miracle. Perhaps today, you need a miracle. Put your faith to work.
“When they had come to Capernaum, those who received the temple tax came to Peter and said, ‘Does your Teacher not pay the temple tax?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ And when he had come into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, ‘What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take customs or taxes, from their sons or from strangers?’ Peter said to Him, ‘From strangers.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Then the sons are free. Nevertheless, lest we offend them, go to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the fish that comes up first. And when you have opened its mouth, you will find a piece of money; take that and give it to them for Me and you.’” (Matthew 17:24–27)
Jesus had every right not to pay the tax. As God and Creator, He owns all things. Yet, He left us a lesson: we must be responsible with our earthly obligations and trust that He is able to provide—even through the most unlikely means. God placed coins in a fish’s mouth; likewise, He can put food on your table or supply whatever you need.
“Then He came to Bethsaida; and they brought a blind man to Him, and begged Him to touch him.” (Mark 8:22)
At least three of the disciples were from Bethsaida. They were in familiar territory, and it was commonly believed in those days that touching God would bring healing. Today, we cannot physically touch Jesus, but we can trust in His Word—and by faith, be healed.
“If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” (Mark 8:34)
Thus, the chapter ends with an invitation to follow Jesus. It is my prayer that God grants you the miracle you need today.
