Commentary and Reflection:
This portion sits in the middle of the Genesis narrative, which describes the reconciliation of Joseph with his brothers. Joseph had gone through many trials, starting with the estrangement from his family, simply because of his brothers’ jealousy.
The Lord used hardships to move Joseph to his appointment as the second in command over Egypt. God placed Joseph in a position that would enable him to save his direct family and the entire Hebrew people.
Beginning with Genesis 43:1, Joseph’s brothers have been sent a second time by their father, Jacob, to get food from Egypt because of the famine that has covered the land. Even though they have met Joseph once before, they do not recognize him as their lost brother. God has set the stage to bring about reconciliation in a dramatic way.
“During the years since Joseph was separated from his brothers, these sons of Jacob changed in character. Envious, turbulent, deceptive, cruel, and revengeful they had been. Still, when tested by adversity, they were shown to be unselfish, true to one another, devoted to their father, and, themselves, middle-aged men, subject to his authority.” PP 225.3
Not until Judah confessed his guilt (44:16; ‘God has uncovered your servants’ guilt’ refers to their sin of selling Joseph) and showed true repentance by offering to take Benjamin’s place is forgiveness and reconciliation possible.
“Before reconciliation, there is conflict. Crises bring out the best (and the worst) in people-as exemplified in Genesis 44.” Andrews Bible Commentary p.189
We may face times when those we love and trust seem to turn their backs, and we are left feeling alone. Remember, the Lord has said,
“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave or forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 31:8
May the Lord bless and keep you safe.
