Commentary and Reflection:
1 Chronicles 12 is a martial chapter describing David’s first army when he was crowned king over all of Israel. The first verses are dedicated to those who joined him while he was still a fugitive, followed by a list of those who joined from all tribes once he was crowned. These were brave, strong men skilled in battle. Verse 22 describes them as “a great army, like the army of God,” a phrase denoting national pride, probably referring to their number and appearance.
David met with suspicion some who came from the tribes of Benjamin and Judah. The Benjaminites were Saul’s relatives, and David wanted to know their intentions. He also suspected the Judahites because they arrived with them. In a gesture of courage, he went out to meet them himself. Integrity was valuable to him; he suffered much later in his life when he committed severe sins that were publicly exposed. On this occasion, he could say before God that his hands were not stained with blood.
When the project is of The Lord, He confirms it through various means. This is how the Holy Spirit used Amasai, a prestigious warrior and leader of a group of brave men, to endorse David’s leadership as the king chosen by The Lord. Under inspiration, Amasai exclaimed, “We are yours, O David; We are on your side, O son of Jesse! Peace, peace to you, And peace to your helpers! For your God helps you.” 1 Chronicles 12:18.
We should not support any leader or movement without explicit approval from The Lord and clear confirmation from the Holy Spirit. David had Samuel’s support, respected Saul as The Lord’s anointed, evidenced his calling through his actions, and God’s blessing was evident in his campaigns. Now, the Holy Spirit confirms him through Amasai. The line of divine direction was traceable, obvious, and transparent. We should expect no less when supporting a leader or movement.
Psalm 133 celebrates the gathering of brothers in harmony under The Lord’s direction and blessing. It is excellent and delightful, and “behold” is an invitation to experience it. We lose this delight and goodness when we choose not to assemble with God’s people. The sacred anointing oil used for Aaron was fragrant and holy. When Aaron was anointed High Priest, the perfumed oil dripped onto his beard and garments. Aaron represents the religious order established by God for His people. We should gather under the leadership chosen and anointed by Him.
“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!“
I pray you always seek God’s direction for life and faith.
