Commentary and Reflection
Psalm 45 has been referred to as a love song. Its poetic language describes a majestic and mighty king going to meet his beautiful bride. The chapter refers to his beauty, majesty, and blessing from God. However, in vs. 6, the Psalmist changes from the description of an earthly king by using the words “Your throne O God,” which can be pointing to God the heavenly Father. Further, in vs. 7, he writes of “the anointed one who loves righteousness and hates iniquity.” This inspired expression can be allocated to Jesus Christ and is referenced in Hebrews 1: 8, 9.
Verses 10 – 17 address the queen, her beauty, her garment, and the joy she brings to the king when she enters the palace. The same could be said of Christ the king and the church, his bride. The same blessing given to the earthly king, that he will be remembered throughout all generations, will be fulfilled when the heavenly king returns and all the people will praise him forever.
Psalm 49 emphasizes the need for us to be wise in all our affairs in this life because whether rich or poor, of low estate or high degree, all humanity ends up in the grave, and all earthly possessions achieved will be left behind when they are gone. The psalmist cautions us to adhere to the wisdom from above and not walk in the way of the foolish who receive the praises of men yet forget that God is the One responsible for his redemption through the death of His Son, Jesus Christ.
Let us strive to live in obedience to God, knowing that the riches of this world are nothing to be compared with the eternal glories awaiting us in eternity. Let us look forward to the hope of rising in the first resurrection to see the face of the One who instructed us in the path of righteousness.
Be blessed and be a blessing to others today and always.
