Commentary and Reflection
Psalm 87 is a song about Zion. Zion was the name of a mountain upon which much of Jerusalem was built even before David took it from the Jebusites. Still, this name has transcended its geographical origin to represent something more glorious in the biblical and spiritual sense.
Zion is synonymous with Jerusalem; Israel is also called Zion, and “the city of God” is called Zion. It is a source of inspiration for poets and singers. This song says that all who know the Lord are counted as citizens of Zion.
When it says that “Most High Himself shall establish her,” Zion represents the church and the capital of the Kingdom of God. Zechariah says that Jesus will set His feet on Jerusalem when He finally comes to establish His Kingdom, on the Mount of Olives, which will split in two and fill the whole earth.
“And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives,
Which faces Jerusalem on the east.
And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two,
From east to west,
Making a very large valley;” Zechariah 14:4
Chapter 3 of the first book of Chronicles records the descendants of David in Hebron and Jerusalem, as well as the descendants of Solomon.
May the Lord grant you a greatly blessed day.
